Novena for a Good Confession – Day 6: Purpose of Amendment
Today we pray for the grace of a firm purpose of amendment—the sincere intention to avoid sin and its near occasions in the future.
Today's Focus: Purpose of Amendment
True repentance involves a turning away from sin and a turning toward God. A firm purpose of amendment is a core requirement for a valid confession. We ask for the grace of spiritual strength to not only be sorry for our past but to be determined and practical in our approach to holiness. We seek the wisdom to avoid the situations and habits that lead us into sin.
Prayer for Day 6
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the grace of conversion. As I continue this novena, I ask for the power of Your Spirit to transform my will. Help me to desire holiness more than I desire the temporary pleasures of sin.
Prayer for Purpose of Amendment:
Lord Jesus, You told the woman caught in adultery to "go and sin no more." Give me that same resolve today. Help me to identify the "near occasions" of my sins—the people, places, and things that lead me astray. Grant me the courage to cut off what causes me to stumble and the persistence to build new habits of virtue. I do not trust in my own strength, but in Your grace that makes all things new.
Daily Intention:
Today I pray for a firm purpose of amendment. I ask for the grace to effectively resolve to avoid my past sins and to take practical steps to pursue a life of grace and peace.
Scripture Reading:
"No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." (Luke 9:62)
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be
Closing Prayer:
Lord, fill me with Your strength. May my confession be the start of a truly new chapter in my life. I bring my intentions to You (mention your intentions here). Help me to follow You faithfully from this day forward.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Reflection for Today
The purpose of amendment doesn't mean we have to be certain we will never sin again. We are human and weak. Rather, it means that *right now* we truly intend, with God's help, to avoid that sin.
A key part of this is avoiding the "near occasions of sin." If we say we are sorry for a sin but intentionally walk back into the environment where we know we will commit it, our resolution is not firm.
Think about one or two practical changes you can make following your confession. Perhaps it's a change in how you use your time, a way you speak to someone, or a habit of prayer. God's grace is there to help you succeed.
