Novena for a Good Confession – Day 2: Contrition

Today we pray for the grace of perfect contrition—a sincere sorrow for our sins because they offend God.

Today's Focus: Contrition

Contrition is more than just a feeling of guilt; it is a movement of the heart toward God. We ask for the grace to be sorry for our sins primarily because we love God and know that our sins have hurt our relationship with Him. We seek a "broken and contrite heart" that is ready for healing.

Prayer for Day 2

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your endless patience with me. As I continue this novena, I ask for a heart that is truly sorry for my sins. Open my eyes to the beauty of Your love, so that I may see how my sins have turned me away from You.

Prayer for Contrition:
Lord, grant me the gift of tears if that is Your will, but above all, grant me a sincere change of heart. Help me to detest sin not because I fear punishment, but because I love You. Let my sorrow be a bridge that leads me back to Your merciful embrace.

Daily Intention:
Today I pray for the grace of true contrition. I ask God to melt the hardness of my heart and to replace it with a heart of flesh, sensitive to His love and sorrowful for my failings.

Scripture Reading:
"A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." (Psalm 51:17)

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

Closing Prayer:
Lord, help me to prepare well for confession. May my sorrow be a sign of my love for You. I bring my intentions to You today (mention your intentions here). Transform my heart, Lord, and make it like Yours.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Reflection for Today

The Catechism teaches that contrition is "sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again." It is the most important act of the penitent.

We often confuse contrition with emotion. While we may feel emotional, contrition is essentially a choice—an act of the will. It is the decision to side with God against our own sins. When we say, "I am sorry," we are saying, "I wish I hadn't done that, and I choose You over that sin."

God never rejects a contrite heart. No matter how many times we have fallen, if we are truly sorry, His mercy is ready to make us new.
